Description

GL.iNet GL-MT5000 Gateway

The GL.iNet GL-MT5000 is a wired VPN gateway designed for homes, small offices, and individuals who want greater control over their own network. It combines VPN performance of up to 1,100 Mbps via WireGuard® and up to 1,000 Mbps via OpenVPN-DCO with three 2.5 Gbps Ethernet ports, Multi-WAN support, DPI protection, and intelligent traffic management. A 2.0 GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, 1 GB of DDR4 memory, and 8 GB of eMMC storage provide the hardware foundation needed both to secure your home connection, as well as to create more complex configurations based on OpenWrt 21.02. Among other things, the device can serve as a VPN gateway, a system-level ad blocker, a lightweight NAS with external storage, or a DLNA media server. It will also prove useful for more advanced users who want to configure their network themselves, install additional packages, and run their own services.

VPN with speeds up to 1100 Mb/s

The GL-MT5000 lets you enjoy VPN protection without sacrificing a fast wired connection. VPN throughput reaches 1,100 Mb/s with WireGuard®, while hardware-accelerated OpenVPN-DCO enables speeds of up to 1,000 Mb/s. These capabilities come in handy when remotely accessing your home network, transferring large files, or securing traffic across your entire LAN. The gateway works with over 30 VPN services, and the VPN Obfuscation feature masks the distinctive characteristics of VPN traffic, making it harder for DPI systems to detect and reducing the risk of such connections being flagged, throttled, or blocked. This allows for more stable access even on networks that use restrictive VPN-blocking mechanisms.

DPI, Monitoring, and Greater Network Control

The Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) mechanism provides comprehensive protection and control over network traffic. The GL.iNet GL-MT5000 can automatically filter out malicious traffic, gambling sites, and malware, and also allows you to manually block specific applications, domains, and IP addresses. These features are complemented by a visual dashboard that monitors application usage in real time and displays traffic trends over a 7-day period. This makes it easier to detect unusual activity and devices or applications that are using a large portion of the available bandwidth, allowing the administrator of a home or small business network to better control its status and usage.

Smooth Traffic Flow Thanks to SQM and Dynamic QoS

High network load doesn’t have to mean high latency during video conferences, streaming, or online gaming. Built-in Smart Queue Management (SQM) counteracts bufferbloat and limits latency increases when the connection is heavily utilized, optimizing the traffic queue for devices on the LAN. Dynamic QoS goes a step further by allocating available resources according to application priorities—traffic related to, for example, video conferencing or gaming can take precedence over background file downloads. Combined with Multi-WAN, the device effectively meets the needs of remote workers and small businesses for whom connection reliability is critical—if there is a problem with one link, traffic can be switched to a backup connection.

Three 2.5 Gb/s ports and USB-C 3.0

The three Ethernet ports support speeds of 10/100/1000/2500 Mb/s, enabling the GL.iNet GL-MT5000 to provide high-speed wired connectivity for demanding setups. It features a 2.5 Gb/s WAN port and two 2.5 Gb/s LAN ports; the WAN port can be configured as a LAN port, and one of the LAN ports can function as a WAN port—allowing you to tailor the connection layout to your specific network and take full advantage of Multi-WAN features. A separate USB-C 3.0 data port allows you to connect high-speed external storage devices and 3G/4G/5G modems, which can be used, among other things, as a backup source of network access. This port can simultaneously provide 5 V/2 A power to connected devices.

OpenWrt and Expansion Flexibility

The OpenWrt 21.02 system with the Linux 5.4.281 kernel offers users significantly greater customization options than using only the basic functions of a network gateway. 1 GB of DDR4 memory and 8 GB of eMMC storage allow you to install packages, run additional services, and develop your own network configuration. As a result, the GL.iNet GL-MT5000 can function as a configurable VPN gateway, a system-level ad blocker, a lightweight NAS using external storage, or a DLNA media server, and its open architecture well suits the needs of networking enthusiasts and those setting up a home lab. It’s also possible to create a private cloud using the device as a VPN server to provide remote access to your home NAS and the photos, files, and multimedia stored on it.

A Compact Gateway for Home and Small Office Use

Measuring 75 × 92 × 25 mm and weighing 148 g, the GL.iNet GL-MT5000 offers extensive capabilities. A separate USB-C port provides 5 V/3 A power and is compatible with standard PD power adapters; power consumption is less than 5 W. The housing also features a system indicator, a VPN indicator, and a Reset button, making it easy to monitor the device’s basic status. The gateway can operate at temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C, while the permissible storage temperature range is from -20°C to 70°C. This solution combines high-speed VPN, advanced protection and traffic analysis, flexible port configuration, and the open OpenWrt platform in a single compact design.
