• Surveillance → 4+ bays, PoE switch + camera licenses, HDDs rated for 24/7 write workloads.
• Backup target → prioritize snapshots, replication, object/cloud backup & AES encryption.
• Need remote access? Pick models with secure QuickConnect/DDNS/VPN options.

Capacity planning: Choose NAS-grade CMR HDDs for arrays; add SSDs for cache/tier. Estimate usable space after RAID (e.g., RAID5 ≈ (N−1)×drive size). Keep ~20% free for snapshots and performance headroom. Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 off-site.
